Interim marketer or fractional CMO?

The shift towards fractional and interim leadership has accelerated significantly over the last few years. But which - if either - does your business actually need?

Not that long ago, businesses either hired a full-time Marketing Director or muddled through without one. Now, more organisations are turning to interim and fractional marketing leadership as a flexible way to access senior expertise without the long-term cost or commitment of a permanent hire. And it’s not just startups doing it.

Professional services firms, B2B organisations, scale-ups and larger businesses are increasingly bringing in experienced marketing leaders on an interim or fractional basis to help navigate growth, launches, restructuring and change.

The rise of interim and fractional marketing leadership

The shift towards fractional and interim leadership has accelerated significantly over the last few years. According to LinkedIn data referenced by Axios, profiles mentioning “fractional” grew from around 2,000 in 2022 to more than 144,000 by the end of 2024.

At the same time, Marketing Week reported increasing demand for interim and fractional CMOs as businesses face tighter budgets, longer recruitment cycles and growing pressure on marketing teams to deliver commercial impact quickly.

The reasons are fairly simple: businesses need flexibility, growth expectations remain high, marketing has become more complex and many organisations don’t need (or can’t justify) a full-time CMO, though leadership gaps still need experienced support.

Fractional and interim models allow businesses to access senior marketing expertise quickly, while scaling support around what the organisation actually needs.

So what’s the difference?

What is an Interim Marketing Director?

An Interim Marketing Director is usually brought in to provide hands-on leadership during a period of transition or change.

That might include:

  • parental leave cover

  • secondments

  • unexpected departures

  • transformation projects

  • short-term support while recruitment is underway

The role is typically more operational and embedded day-to-day in the business.

An interim leader helps stabilise the function, keep momentum going and ensure projects, teams and stakeholders continue moving forward while longer-term decisions are made.

In practice, that often means:

  • stepping into leadership meetings quickly

  • keeping campaigns and launches on track

  • supporting and coaching in-house teams• managing stakeholders and suppliers

  • improving structure and prioritisation

  • ensuring a smooth handover to a permanent hire

Interim support tends to work best when the business needs immediate leadership and continuity.

My approach to interim leadership

  • Rapid onboarding: I get up to speed quickly — understanding people, priorities, projects and commercial pressures within days, not weeks.

  • Stabilise and deliver: The focus is usually on maintaining momentum, simplifying priorities and ensuring the team can continue delivering confidently.

  • Team coaching: Alongside delivery, I often support and mentor in-house marketers to build confidence, capability and stronger ways of working.

  • Smooth transition: A good interim role should leave the business in a stronger place, with clearer structure, better alignment and a smooth transition into permanent leadership.

What is a Fractional CMO?

A Fractional CMO provides ongoing senior marketing leadership on a flexible, part-time basis.

Unlike interim support, which is often temporary and operational, fractional leadership is usually more strategic and longer-term.

Businesses typically bring in a Fractional CMO when they need senior marketing leadership but not five days a week, the CEO is leading marketing by default, the business is scaling quickly, there’s strong marketing execution internally but no overarching strategy, marketing and commercial teams need better alignment and launches, positioning or growth plans need more senior oversight.

A Fractional CMO acts as part of the leadership team; helping shape strategy, align stakeholders and create a clearer, more commercially focused approach to marketing.

According to The Marketing Centre, many SMEs are increasingly choosing fractional leadership because it provides senior expertise without the cost and risk of a permanent executive hire.

My approach to fractional CMO support

  • Shape the agenda: I help leadership teams define priorities, growth goals and where marketing can have the biggest commercial impact.

  • Clarify strategy and positioning: That often includes refining messaging, proposition and audience focus so marketing activity becomes more intentional and effective.

  • Align leadership and teams: One of the biggest challenges in growing businesses is alignment. I help bring stakeholders together around clear priorities and expectations.

  • Drive execution: A strategy only works if it translates into action. I help teams prioritise activity, define KPIs and maintain momentum.

  • Coach and upskill: Fractional support should strengthen internal capability too. I often mentor marketing managers and support future leaders within the business.

Why fractional and interim support are growing

The rise of interim and fractional leadership reflects a wider shift in how businesses think about leadership.

Marketing teams are under pressure to prove commercial value, modernise capabilities,

navigate AI and digital change, launch more effectively, and do more with smaller teams. At the same time, many organisations want faster access to senior expertise, more flexibility, lower hiring risk, and leadership that can scale with the business.

According to research cited by Consultport, 25% of businesses have already adopted fractional hiring models, with that figure expected to continue growing.

Meanwhile, businesses using interim and fractional leadership models often benefit from faster onboarding, lower overheads, immediate strategic support, more focused prioritisation and external perspective and experience.

Which model is right for you?

You may need an Interim Marketing Director if:

  • you need immediate hands-on leadership

  • someone has left unexpectedly

  • you need continuity during recruitment

  • your team needs stabilising quickly

  • you need experienced delivery support during change

You may need a Fractional CMO if:

  • marketing lacks strategic direction

  • your leadership team needs senior marketing expertise

  • your CEO is leading marketing by default

  • you’re scaling or repositioning the business

  • you need clearer commercial alignment and prioritisation

And sometimes businesses need both - starting with interim support and evolving into longer-term fractional leadership as the organisation grows.

Final thought

Flexible leadership models are giving organisations a more practical, commercially focused way to access experienced marketing expertise exactly when they need it.
